How is a knitted jacquard scarf made?
Jacquard is a knitting technique. The machine carries several coloured yarns at once and decides, stitch by stitch, which one shows on the face of the fabric. The design is therefore part of the scarf itself, not a layer printed on top. It cannot crack, peel or fade, even after years of Saturday afternoons and trips through the washing machine.
Because the knit has two layers, the back shows the same design in negative: the background colour becomes the lettering colour and vice versa. That two-tone, reversible look is exactly what makes a football scarf instantly recognisable on the terraces.
